An audience question bank is a backlog of needs with evidence attached. It records what someone asked, the context needed to understand it and what you might do next. It differs from a list of finished content ideas: an unanswered question may need more research, a short explanation, a demonstration or no public response at all.
Keep the original question and your interpretation separate
Store the source URL and a concise paraphrase where appropriate. Add the creator or community context, the post topic and the date you inspected it. Then write your interpretation in another field. “Can this fit on a small desk?” is a question; “people want budget equipment” is a broader hypothesis that the question does not automatically establish.
This separation makes the bank easier to revisit when your understanding changes. The GOV.UK research analysis guide distinguishes observations from findings and actions. Our editorial adaptation uses the same discipline without treating public comments as a recruited user research study.
Use a question-intake template
| Field | Review rule | |
|---|---|---|
| Question ID | A stable label such as Q-014 | Use it to connect later drafts and replies without copying personal details everywhere |
| Source context | URL, platform, capture date and relevant post topic | A short question can change meaning when removed from its thread |
| Underlying need | Constraint, confusion, comparison or missing step | Keep uncertain interpretations explicitly provisional |
| Independent occurrences | Relevant sources with duplicates and replies marked | Count within your collected sample only |
| Existing answer | Your current post or a trustworthy resource | Check whether a new post adds anything |
| Next decision | Research, draft, combine, defer or decline | Name the evidence or production work needed |
Collect a bounded set of conversations
Choose the question area, sources and time window before searching. For example, inspect recent discussion about filming in small workspaces across a few relevant accounts and one community. Record what you could retrieve and what remained unavailable. The bank describes that collection, not the entire platform or all people interested in the topic.
Native Reddit search supports community scope and comment search. Record whether your question came from a post title, top-level comment or reply. On YouTube, comment-thread retrieval has ordering and pagination controls, and included replies can be incomplete. One response is not necessarily the whole discussion.
Deduplicate meaning without losing the constraint
Merge questions only when the answer and situation are substantially the same. “Where should I put a microphone?” and “Where should I put a microphone when the desk also holds a laptop?” may belong to the same theme, but the second has an important constraint. Retain it as a sub-question if the generic answer would not help.
Repeated replies in one argument should not look like independent confirmations. Retain the thread relationship. If you report counts, say exactly what was counted, such as distinct retrieved comments or distinct source posts. Do not translate a count into market size or claim that silent viewers share the same need.
Worked example: choose the next answer
Illustrative worked example
These question-bank entries are invented. Their priority reflects the hypothetical creator’s ability to answer them, not observed demand or a validated opportunity.
| Question | Editorial decision | |
|---|---|---|
| Q-014: Where do my notes go while filming? | The creator can show two own desk arrangements | Draft a practical comparison with visible tradeoffs |
| Q-015: Which microphone should everyone buy? | A broad product recommendation requires more testing | Narrow to explaining placement using the equipment already owned |
| Q-016: How can I hide a cable safely? | The question may require domain-specific guidance | Find an appropriate source before choosing the scope |
| Q-017: Can the tray also hold camera batteries? | An optional detail related to Q-014 | Include if it fits; otherwise retain as a possible follow-up |
Use three decision questions rather than an unexplained opportunity score: can you answer this accurately, can you demonstrate something useful, and does it add to what you already published? If the answer is uncertain, choose more research. A low-frequency question can still be worth answering when it exposes a costly misunderstanding or a missing step.
Maintain the bank after publishing
Attach the published URL to the question ID and write what the piece actually answered. New comments may reveal an omitted constraint. Create a follow-up entry instead of rewriting the original observation to make your idea appear inevitable. If an existing resource already covers the question well, link it in your working notes and choose a different contribution.
Use Comment Insights to explore available conversations and Reddit Audience Pulse for community context. Move a selected question into a content brief or a content series only after deciding what original answer you can provide.
Sources and research notes
The intake and prioritization worksheet is an original Superlurk editorial method. It adapts observation-versus-interpretation discipline from user research to public conversation samples. Invented questions below illustrate the method and do not represent surveyed audience needs. How we approach social research.
- YouTube Data API: commentThreads list
Documents comment ordering, pagination and the limits of included replies.
- Reddit Help: available search features
Explains searching communities and comments with explicit scope.
- GOV.UK Service Manual: analyse a research session
Separates observations, findings and actions in qualitative research; adapted here for editorial notes.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions should I keep in my audience question bank?
Keep the amount you can review and act on. Archive irrelevant or already answered entries, and preserve sources for active questions rather than aiming for a quota.
Should I rank questions by comment likes?
Likes can be one public observation, but they do not establish representativeness or answer quality. Consider context, independent sources, existing answers and your ability to produce a useful response.
Is a question bank the same as a content calendar?
No. The bank records possible needs and research decisions. A calendar schedules the selected pieces you are prepared to produce.
