Creator Discovery: Build and Check an Influencer Shortlist
A useful creator shortlist explains why each person fits a specific campaign. Follow the research path from relevant posts to comparable evidence and the questions that still need direct confirmation.
Start with a decision
Which creators fit this audience, topic, format and deliverable, and what do we need to confirm?
A practical research sequence
- Define the campaign before searching. Specify the audience, language, platform, format and deliverable. Add a place only when locality matters; a creator's location does not establish their audience's location.
- Discover through relevant recent content. Search by the problems, products and topics the creator actually covers. Follow the original posts, then check several examples before assigning topical fit.
- Compare equivalent observations. Use the same platform, format and time window. Record the available counters and the denominator of any rate; leave missing values unknown.
- Separate research from confirmation. Ask the creator for audience reports, availability, deliverables and usage terms where needed. Public research does not certify an audience or predict campaign sales.

A worked example
Illustrative worked example: a Bengaluru café searches for creators who cover cafés and public transport access. Local venue posts support subject fit. The shortlist keeps audience geography unknown until the creator shares appropriate first-party information; it never labels city-tagged posts as proof that followers live nearby.
What the evidence can establish
Search returns a bounded candidate set. Public likes, views and follower counts do not establish authentic audience identity, private reach or business outcomes. Compare rates only when the underlying definitions match.
